Garfield Weston supports the Trust’s new science education centre

We have just received a £300,000 capital grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation towards the development of our new science education centre at Stansfeld Park in Oxford. Since setting up over 50 years ago, a consistent theme of Garfield Weston has been the importance placed on support for education – from after school clubs to major national institutions. The Foundation awards grants to educational projects across the country that demonstrate excellence.
The Trust is developing the UK’s first indoor-outdoor science education centre for primary-aged children. It will lay the foundations of science learning and will provide opportunities for young people to develop a lasting enthusiasm for STEM subjects, experience the natural world and learn what biodiversity is all about. This builds on our highly successful and nationally-recognised schools outreach programme that’s reached half a million pupils over the last 30 years. We hope our new centre will inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. Oxfordshire is one of the UK’s most significant centres for science-based research and enterprise so investing in, and supporting, future generations is critical to maintaining the county’s position at the forefront of research and innovation.
The generous grant received from Garfield Weston is a real endorsement of what The Oxford Trust is doing for science education here, in Oxford. Their support means we have now raised nearly half the funds needed for our new science education centre but are still looking for a further £1.25m from other major grant funders and patrons too.
